Just as a new school year for our 50 million public school students begins, Congress heads back to Washington, D.C. this week from its summer break. But the lawmakers won’t be in session long. They go back on recess in three weeks to campaign for re-election.
Before Congress leaves Capitol Hill again, public school students need them to finish their work on several key pieces of legislation. Please join the National School Boards Action Center in urging the lawmakers to:
- Continue to use their Congressional oversight authority on the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to support local governance and community ownership in public education.
- Complete reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career & Technical Education Act to ensure access to high-quality programs.
- Complete reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act to empower local school districts to serve healthy meals.
- Vote "yes" on a final funding bill that maximizes investments in programs serving disadvantaged children.
